I: Story

Progress is a necessary poison. This is a "law" of life. Mankind must press onwards in order to thrive and live on, even if it means sucking the very earth we stand on dry, and forcing the land to bleed something else.

It's been years since many of us here have seen the wide expanse of a grassy plain. Years since we peered up through leafy ceilings at the sunlight peeking through the foliage. Years since we tasted the salty touch of the ocean on our damp lips. Progress. Progress has dried our oceans, and burned our forests, and torn every last resource from nature's frail body. In their places, men erected cities. Built laboratories and factories that could create what humans needed. Water. Food. The very air we breathe. All of it became a synthesized commodity after the regime we know as Ragnarok took control, trampling on the grasping fingers of democracy. The place our ancestors called "America" is now a city that spans far and wide: The Ouroburos.

Here, the ones that can afford decadence live in it. To them, the city's riches never run dry. They're never short of drink, their appetites for lust are easily sated, and poverty is nothing more than an affliction they'd rather not contract. They live oblivious to the interests of the regime that now rules them. They don't know what happens outside their posh lifestyle.

They have no idea that the rest of the world isn't quite faring as well as The Ouroburos. How could they? Communication to anywhere outside the city limits is restricted. Citizens are urged to live in the comfort of the city's expanse. All the while, Ragnarok sates its own desire for conquest. No longer do countries feud over oil or natural resources. There's nothing left to take. Religion is a passing memory. Control has become the currency for the world's leaders, and Ragnarok doesn't hesitate to oppress and crush the will of any that stand before them.

Even at home, ignorance runs rampant. While the wealthy enjoy their decadence in Ouroburos' inner circle, wealth is something that isn't that well known in the outer ring. The majority of The Ouroburos' citizens don't hold the luxuries that small percentage does. The affliction that the wealthy scorn is well known here.

I offer you a different hand than the one dealt to us. I offer you freedom from this facade that has been placed over our eyes; freedom that the whole world can possess. I head an organization that seeks to overthrow our glorious "Leaders" and build a world worth living in its place. You know that something is wrong here. I believe that we all do. But a thin, finite line separates the belief of one that watches, and the creed of a raised fist.

They call me Athos. I command the Musketeers.
Unus pro omnibus...omnes pro uno.
All for one.
One for all.

II: The World

Progress

-The year is 2120.

- The earth has been completely drained dry. There's no such thing as "natural resources" now, being that mankind has taken all there is to take. Oceans simply don't exist anymore. With no gas, oil, or fuel, internal combustion engines and firearms have become next to obsolete due to their impracticality and unreasonable cost to operate.

- Swords and other bladed weapons have returned as the primary form of self defense. Most are carried openly. Guns are still held by a selective few that still kept the weapons and ammunition from before the world's decline. They're rarely used, however.

- Crossbows have replaced firearms as the primary form of projectile weaponry. While bulkier and less effective, they cost less to use.

- Food, water, and air are now synthesized commodities, along with a few other materials used for manufacturing and building. Natural resources like oil, gas, and fuel cannot stably by synthesized.

The Ouroburos

- This giant, sprawling city spans almost the entire area that used to be the Americas. It's formed in a perfect circle, thanks to the complete lack of oceans existing on the barren earth.

- The city is comprised of two parts: a large outer ring and a smaller inner circle. The outer ring is home to the more commonplace among The Ouroburos' populace, while the inner circle serves as paradise for the wealthy.

- The outer ring is separated into different sectors, each specified by nothing other than a number.

- The inner ring has more formal sub-cities, each with their own actual name.

Ragnarok

- An imperialistic-minded regime that builds figurative walls around the people it governs. Focused on conquest outwardly, while keeping the populace ignorant of what happens beyond the boundaries of their city.

- This is made easier by how the world is completely divided. Due to the lack of international transportation, and the wide expanse that now stands in place of the world's oceans, countries tend to stay within their own borders.

- The isolation makes it easier for Ragnarok to attempt to take control. They are the only ones who have the technology to create "Skyships", solar-powered, unarmed flying carriers used to ship troops from The Ouroburos to potential "colonies" around the world.

- Ragnarok makes use of secret surveillance to keep The Ouroburos under control. Additionally, they restrict any kind of contact with any areas outside of the city.

Athos

- Athos is the enigmatic leader of The Musketeers. Rarely ever seen by any of them, he orchestrates their movements from the shadows, and intends to take control of The Ouroburos after overthrowing Ragnarok.

The Musketeers

- A small force when compared to Ragnarok's armies. They specialize in covert ops, assassination, espionage, and sabotage, and work as the only force that opposes Ragnarok openly.

- They work against the oppression that Ragnarok imposes on the rest of the world, the ignorance and unjustness that runs rampant in their own city.

-Known for the masks that they wear, each unique to the wearer.

- Widely viewed as terrorists and radicals due to Ragnarok propaganda.

III: Rules

- No godmodding. Your character is yours and yours alone, so don't take control of or kill off another person's character without their say-so.

- Try to post frequently. I'm not looking for daily posts, but we need to keep this thread active.

- PM all your profiles to me with the subject line "ATHOS" before posting. You're clear to post once you either get confirmation from me, or you see your profile posted in the OOC thread.

- Keep it PG-13. Goes without saying that we don't want things getting too graphic in here.

- You can have more than one character as long as you can keep track of both of them.

Sion ------ DiBenetto
----------------------------------------
As we were, so perfect, so happy...
----------------------------------------

He worked himself into a rhythm as he sat behind the counter in the dimly lit room. The sole ceiling fan in the whole bar chased itself in circles steadily, as if having some kind of purpose in spinning on and on. The silence had settled in like a blanket, muffling everything to Sion but the task at hand: rubbing away at the slightly dusty wooden counter with the damp washcloth in his hand. It was his ritual every day around this time, busy work to dull the boredom that set in once he started waiting to switch the glowing "open" sign in front of the bar open. XIII only ever opened for business at 7 PM every day. It was 6:45.

A buzz from his pocket broke the trance. He sighed wearily, knowing who was on the other end before he even summoned the willpower to answer his phone. Nevertheless, it was pulled out, glanced at, and had a finger pressed on its green phone icon. No use ignoring him. He'll just call back.

"Two AM tomorrow. Do you have everything you need?" a curt voice asked over the phone's crisp speakers. Sion nodded, more to himself than to the person on the other line. They'd gone through the plan for tonight over and over. Its cracks had been found, filled in, and rendered foolproof. He'd made sure of that. But that's what made it so damn tiring. It was just him going through the motions. Again.

Such was life as Athos' right hand.

"Yeah, I'm set. I'll be off after closing. No need to worry," Sion answered, a tired weight to his voice. He hung up the phone quickly after that. No need to mince words. No need to tempt a wiretap from the guys up high.

Slipping the phone back into his pocket, he regarded the wooden surface one last time before picking up the towel and hanging it up messily on a hook behind the counter. He fixed himself a quick shot of whiskey, downing the amber liquid before making his way out to the bar's front door. He reached out, flicking a switch on the wall, setting alight the sign outside.

Alan Helinski was just wrapping up a patrol when his favorite building began to advertise at the usual time. That is what he was nearly reduced to on slow days: Neighborhood Watch. The distinction was he didn't call the police. The police were what he was watching for.

Thankfully, this was an independent operation of his. Patrols were rarely ordered by his superiors. Going out on one was actually recommended against, but Alan felt as though he had learned to be discreet enough to manage his own free time. Free time. How ironic. So, once Sion opened up for business he began to head over.

The sign read "XIII". Alan found it suitable as the title of the only place he ever felt at peace. A little reverse psychology went a long way in his opinion.

He fetched his messenger bag from it's hiding place in the adjacent alleyway and entered the building. He walked through the low light to his usual seat at the bar and put his head down on the synthetic wood counter. Alan was the first customer of the day, so he took advantage of the momentary silence. The quiet was a delicacy.

After a few minutes he looked up at Sion, his favorite barkeep. "Evening, Mr. D."

Helena Penelope Alabaster

Helena looked back the way she came for the millionth time. She couldn't go back again, not after what had happened, so it was pointless to look back, but still. It's funny how you can have the conviction of a stubborn bull, but as soon as things are finite and no longer in your control real panic sets in. Helena shivered though she wasn't particularly cold. As she walked along the some-what abandoned street she realized that she hadn't eaten for nearly 24 hours. She had money, of course, but she never wanted to stop moving. Distance was medicine, and so far, she hadn't taken enough. Her stomach was getting unbearable, though, and she examined the nearby store fronts. The closest thing to food was a bar called XIII. Not her first preference, but hey, she wasn't in the mood to be picky.

As she entered the pub she noticed it seemed pretty empty as well. Apparently, nobody liked to leave their homes in the outerboros. Not too surprising. The two men seemed about her age, maybe older, and Helena was more than a little intimidated. Not that she'd let them know that. Letting the door shut behind her, Helena walked up to the bar and took a seat. She tried to remember what alcoholic drinks were poor enough to be served here, while mentally hitting herself for sounding like such a prick. Even if it was only in her mind. Confidently, she cleared her throat to get the server guy's attention. "Hey. Do you serve food?" She asked, hoping she didn't sound like an ass.

Sion ------ DiBenetto
----------------------------------------
As we were, so perfect, so happy...
----------------------------------------

Sion looked up as the first customer of the night walked in, looking spry and as full of youthful vigor as ever. Alan was a usual at the bar, and could hold a nice conversation no matter the number of drinks both of them downed. He was a good customer, but Sion didn't really know too much about the guy besides that. Which was ironic, being that Sion had been the one that plucked Alan off the streets in the first place. The past was the past. Better that it stayed there. But that vigor...he had some just like it when he had started as a musketeer. It was strange sometimes, seeing what he had lost touch with. He didn't have the heart to break the guy's spirit, though. At least not all the time.

"Hey there, Alan. What can I get you?" he offered the younger man a nod, sliding a coaster across the table to him. His attention was drawn away, though, by another customer coming in.

She seemed a bit stiff. She was pretty, but something seemed a bit off about the way she held herself and the way she spoke. But customers were customers. Sion slid another coaster to her as she sat down at the counter. Along with the coaster, he handed her a small menu. It was more of a brochure, really. He couldn't afford to be too high end here. Athos had the resources to spare, but it didn't seem right to Sion.

"Here. Food's on the front. Club sandwich's pretty good if you want something fast, but hey, just let me know when you're ready to order. Drinks are on the back." he offered a half-smile to the girl before turning back to Alan.

"You're pretty early tonight, aren't you?"

Helena Penelope Alabaster

Helena didn't know what in the hell a club sandwich was, but she wasn't going to risk anything else. Of course she'd had sandwiches before as a child, but still...

Helena knitted her brow as she looked over the drinks on the back. Marcius had always mentioned he liked scotch, but she didn't know if she could handle it herself. She could remember how he'd laugh when she would take a break to sip white wine to help keep her muscles loose for dancing. He'd down a glass after glass but never be drunk, not even slightly, then, clear as anything, flirtatiously say 'I've got an iron stomach. That's why I can lift you so high.' Marcius... well, Able, might be proud of her if he saw her now. Her parents, her proper, fragile parents, would probably have her killed.

With that she steeled herself. "I'll have a club sandwich, please, and a scotch and soda. Thanks." Helena stared at her hands, not really in the mood to invoke conversation. Her onyx ring, a plain band that she kept just in case, just so she wouldn't forget, glinted dully on her finger. There were flecks of silver in the ring, that's why she loved it so much, and when she first got it she swore that the universe was trapped in the shimmering metal. 'Silly, silly girl,' Helena thought as she slid her sleeves over her hands, obscuring the ring from view.

"I'll have a water." Alan replied with a smile. "Water" was, of course, a cheeky code word for synthetic vodka. Alan had no assignments tonight and no cause to stay entirely sober.

Sion couldn't be more wrong about Alan's being early. "Early? No time is too early to come here. Besides I...", Alan glared briefly at the girl who had just walked in looking for a meal, "I'm off work today. And there's no place like home right, Sion?" That's what XIII was to Alan. Sometimes it felt as if all he was fighting for was that bar and it's regulars. In that room he could say and do what he wished. He was free. So no, he was not early. He was years late.

Alan turned his attention to the new face again. Scotch. Impressive. The sight of a lone, young, delicate looking woman walking into a bar with two shady looking men inside and ordering a sandwich and liquor was not a common one. For all she knew this place could have been a strip joint. He confidence made her someone to watch out of the corner of your eye. It was also an excellent excuse to take lots of peaks. She was beautiful. Ragnorak agent? Possible, but unlikely.

Alan gave a fitting eyebrow raise to his server. He put his head back down on the counter with a smirk.

Sion ------ DiBenetto
----------------------------------------
As we were, so perfect, so happy...
----------------------------------------

Sion nodded and set off to prepare the first two orders of the night. Bar tending was like an art form to him. He did away with most of the flashy showmanship that took place behind the counters at most inner circle clubs, and served his drinks with speed and grace. He plucked a shotglass from under the counter first, sliding it onto Alan's coaster. He reached for a clear bottle with an "Absolut" label on it. Naturally, no one had ever had a taste of real Absolut Vodka or any kind of alcohol for years. Everything on his shelves were strictly synthesized. Tasted the same, but only because it was a strict chemical clone.

He filled the shotglass before placing the bottle off to the side, in case Alan was in the mood for more than just one drink.

Just as quickly, he scooped ice onto a long drink glass, pouring in a portion of scotch before filling the glass with club soda and stirring it for the woman. He slid the drink onto her coaster before starting to make the club sandwich.

"Can't disagree there," he said, nodding at Alan as he put together the meal. White bread. Lightly toasted. Crisp lettuce. Swiss cheese. Cucumbers? One? Hell, why not two. Top it with ham. Close sandwich. Slice into halves. "But I might have to call in a favor tonight. Ah...work's a bit short-staffed. Might need your held after closing."

That's all he dared to say with the woman sitting there. In unfamiliar company, Sion learned to watch his words. The slightest slip could give away volumes. Looking up from his work, he plated the meal and placed it in front of her.

"Enjoy," he said, his gaze drawn momentarily to a dim glint from the ring on her finger. Ornate jewelry wasn't too common around the outer ring. Sentimentality was pawned off all too easily.

"Not from around here, are you?" Sion asked. An innocent question. People from the inner circle found their way to the outside sometimes because of relatives or business. Most of them were terrible customers.

Helena Penelope Alabaster

Helena hid her panic behind a sip of scotch. She was expecting to die, but it was only slightly unpleasant. Not bad actually. She supposed all those years of drinking wine under her parents' nose had prepared her adequately. Grabbing the sandwich half with two hands she shrugged in what she hoped was nonchalance. "Visiting a sick relative." She glanced at the guy drinking vodka that was clearly glancing at her. They couldn't expect she was ragnarok material, did they? Although, she supposed the weapons in her duffle wouldn't help much. Thank God her money was in her pocket. Helena took a few bites of her sandwich, forcing herself to relax with each chew.

"I'm actually going to be staying in the outer ring for a while, looking after.. him. I volunteered, family isn't really tight, you know. Medicine is pricey though so... if you're understaffed.. I mean.. I could help out." Helena tried to rationalize the clearly ludicrous thing she was doing. Seriously, what the actual hell was she doing. The only thing she could think of was that she needed to have these people trust her in case they were musketeers. And they clearly were, come on. And trust comes out of getting to know people, right? And what better way than to offer your time and energy and life to two possibly dangerous strangers. Yup, it was fine.

At the same time she also tried to not dwell on the fact that mutual trust is not built on a lie about motive.

Alan was about to ask exactly what type of work Sion was volunteering him for when Helena asked to "help out". The girl had betrayed herself with that question. How very inconspicuous, Ms. Freckles. Alan knew who she wasn't now: not one of them, not government, and not a hungry out-of-towner. She was something else, an amateur something else. Alan wanted to know what.

Alan raised his head off of the counter once again to look into the girls faded blue eyes. He was direct and spoke his mind, but not without his hand on the hilt of the kopis on his hip. Subtle intimidation never hurt anyone, unless they were government of course. "Nobody in their right mind walks into a place like this, in the ouroburos of all places, and asks a few guys like us, as charming as we may seem, if they can 'help out'. Especially not if they look like you." Alan lightly sipped his drink. "That, and you talked too much. So, now we're done being casual. Who are you?" He asked before strategically removed his hand from the weapon. "Honesty will get you farther than you may think."

He watched the girls face for an answer, and her hands for any dangerous movement. Between the trench coat, the pants, and the boots, she had a lot of places to hide a weapon. Under different circumstances he probably would have complemented her fashion sense. He did feel a little silly treating her like a potential killer. At this point, that type of response was just reflex. Over the few years he had been a part of the resistance he learned to force people to earn his trust even if they looked relatively harmless. Believing she meant well would be too much. Alan would have to be satisfied with hoping she did.

Helena's eyes flicked to the hilt of the weapon Alan placed his hand on. "No need to get hostile, believe me." She slid slowly off the stool and kicked her duffel with her boot to Alan's feet. "Everything I have is in there." Glancing from Sion to Alan, Helena wondered why she was doing this. All of this. She didn't need to be here, she didn't have to run away, she could have stayed with her rich family and sympathetically nod when she heard of all the policemen that lost their lives to the rowdy musketeers.

But, frankly, she supposed it was the principal of the thing. "My name's Helena. I was born in the inner circle, but circumstances made it difficult to stay there. So I left." Helena downed the rest of her drink. "So. What else you want to know?"

Sion ------ DiBenetto
----------------------------------------
As we were, so perfect, so happy...
----------------------------------------

Sion held up his hand slightly, motioning Alan off as he moved to fill the man's shot glass again. The movement was smooth and fluid, the bartender not allowing a single drop to stray loose or spill over. He knew that this girl wasn't Ragnarok. He could say that with enough conviction to settle any doubts in his mind. Her demeanor, her motions, even the way she had initially hid her motives were clumsily executed, even though each was done with a practiced, perhaps habitual poise. Sion knew she was trying to play things smoothly, but he was getting little hints that the girl didn't know where she was, or even what she was really getting into.

"How about what you're looking for?" Sion asked simply, sliding a napkin over to her while she ate. He nodded for Alan to kick the duffel bag back over to her. There was no need for precaution...or at least none that Sion sensed. Even if there was, his Schiavona hung at the ready on his left side. Taking lives came without an afterthought to many of those in his profession, sadly.

"Circumstances make it hard for anyone to live anywhere inside the city's gates. Surveillance makes it hard to breathe, and ignorance makes it hard to see. Synthesis makes it hard to know," he continued, turning around as he spoke, starting to fix himself a simple whisky on the rocks. "So when you say it's hard to live, you speak for all of us. Pretty generally, actually."

"So really, what is it that you're looking for out here?"

Alan gave the girl a shocked look as he carefully lifted the bag off of the floor. Disarmament was the ultimate handshake as far as he was concerned. He didn't bother opening it. He and Sion were in agreement there. "No need to invade a lady's privacy, here you go." he said as he handed the bag back to its owner, "Thanks for cooperating, Helena. I'm Alan."

The suspicion could be dismissed now, but Alan was still fairly perplexed by the girl. Circumstances? Like what? Did the local coffee shop close down? Her heritage was the strangest part of her. What could she have done to be exiled? Whether she was exiled or not was questionable, but he had trouble coming up with another motive. She did look somewhat prepared for the harshness of the outer ring. Somewhat prepared. "I wasn't aware that they carried weapons in the circle. While you're here I suggest you wear them, though. When you get mugged you'll know what I'm talking about." This was a true statement as well as subtle encouragement for her to show what she was carrying. He would appear the gentleman while still getting a look at her gear. Brilliance. It was a slow day indeed.

As Sion gave his own opinion on 'Circumstances', Alan delicately sipped his second shot of vodka. The man had a way of describing things. His demeanor seemed to be the direct result of several years of telling stories to his customers and watching the world crumble. It wasn't hard to understand why he drank so much. A steady flow of blood an alcohol will do that to a man, no matter how young.

Alan revised the bartenders question with a friendlier tone. "It looks to me like you've earned your privacy, Helena. But, if you don't mind a little more conversation, I'd be lying if i said i wasn't also curious about what brought you to ouroburos." He spun his chair to face Sion with a cocky smile. "Have you been stepping up on advertising like I told you to Mr. D? Seems to be working."

Helena Penelope Alabaster

Helena accepted her bag from Alan and unzipped it. She put the knife in the holster in her boot, and the slid the crossbow and arrows over her back. She kept the gun buried underneath the clothes and books she had taken, she didn't want to use that until she was alone and desperate. Zipping up the bag, Helena contemplated what she really came here for. She had been so impulsive, just taking off into the night after what happened to Able. She could say she came here for comfort, but this place was no solace. She could say she came here to escape, but throwing herself into life with the musketeers wouldn't help her forget. No matter what reason she thought of, it didn't make sense. She needed to convince two musketeers that she came here for a purpose, but yet she couldn't even convince herself.

Her mind drifted to one of the days she spent in Able's studio, her standing at the barre, stretching, while she watched his reflection dance in the mirror. He wasn't so much technique as passion, and when he danced you could see his fire; it washed over you in waves, all in time with the music. She remembered asking him once what he thought about when he danced. He had replied, 'the revolution.' Helena had thought that was so depressing, an endless battle between two groups that would never get along. When she asked why he said, 'no matter where you stand, it's something to believe in.'

"I came here to find something to believe in. Something worth it. There's nothing like that in the Circle."

Sion ------ DiBenetto
----------------------------------------
As we were, so perfect, so happy...
----------------------------------------

"I suppose that depends on where you're standing," Sion shrugged, leaning up against the sink behind him. He brushed his dark hair out his eye lazily, taking a slow sip of his drink. He felt the comforting burn of the whiskey as it slowly trickled down his throat, warming him like a candle inside his chest. He wasn't done sizing this girl up yet. She had conviction, but she was still a bit immature when it came to the ways of the world they lived in. He'd coax her a little more. Her answer would decide where he would go from there.

"Many would call Ragnarok's cause worth believing in. There's structure. Comfort. Ample room to live life in relative comfort. The power to govern when you would otherwise be powerless."

He turned again, taking her now-empty glass and rinsing it out, wiping it dry before mixing another drink for her. It was one of the first he learned. The drink book had called it XYZ, a slightly bitter drink made of rum and triple sec. Among bartenders, it was a symbol of the end. A goodbye. A wholehearted farewell for the night. But in this case, it was a symbol of Helena leaving all preconceived notion she had of life in the Ouroburos behind. A drink to say goodbye to the last dregs of normalcy.

With that thought in mind, he slid the XYZ over to her, motioning for her to take a sip.

"The search you're on the brink of will take you further than just finding belief. You need to find conviction. But once you start searching, there won't be any turning back."

He held his own drink out to her, offering her a toast in exchange for her answer.

Helena Penelope Alabaster

Helena took the drink and swirled it. Then, looking into Sion's eyes, she held it up to meet his toast. "I suppose you're right, the Ragnarok cause is one to believe in. But if it was worth it or everyone, why does the resistance exist? If I went back... well, I can't. But if I stayed and didn't leave in the first place? I would have had a life that some people would dream of. But you would still be here, in a run down bar with no customers. I want to believe in something a bit more universal. The Ragnarok are a bit too exclusive for me, what with their literal 'inner circle' and all. But you know what? It looks like I'm going to find that where ever I go. Both sides make such grand promises of paradise, but both require so much blood. If I have to choose a side, I'd rather go for the one that at least seems noble. And I thought that was a musketeer." She probably ruined herself, but honestly this wasn't what she expected. This wasn't how Able made it seem. Sure, she sounded petty and superficial and spoiled, but she wasn't exactly raised to not be.

"Cheers," she said solemnly, and brought her lips to the glass. It was alright, but too bitter for her taste. Maybe that was just everything in life going sour. "I'm not backing down. I'm not running. I said I want to be here, and that was the truth. I made a promise, and I'm not planning on breaking it."

Sion downed the rest of his drink in a gulp, offering her a genuine smile. It seemed that there wouldn't be any swaying her. She seemed determined, that was for sure. He was curious to see how that would fare when she was placed into an actual operation. He toyed with the idea of bringing her along that night. The mission wasn't high risk, high stakes. It would give her a taste of exactly what she was getting into.

In that instant, though, he was content to just enjoy the new company. He found that it was better not to overthink operations before they began. He preferred to spend the time trading stories over the counter.

"All right, then," he conceded, putting up his hands, "I suppose you can see for yourself tonight whether or not you want to have a hand in this war."

He glanced over at Alan, watching for his reaction. The younger man had stayed relatively quiet for most of the conversation.

No turning back.. Finding conviction.. Sounds so very familiar, Mr. D. Alan's head gently found the surface of the counter once more. He thought Sion's playing of Devil's advocate a bit strange, but Helena's response was even stranger. Did she believe the musketeers were noble, or was she telling a couple of outer ring dwellers what they wanted to hear? Either way she wasn't the typical circle born daddy's girl. She had made a promise, apparently, to someone.

"And what makes the musketeers so noble?", Alan challenged, not bothering to raise his head. "Colorful speech and trendy street art doesn't disguise the plain fact that they kill just as much as if not more than the government. People look out for themselves no matter what flag they're flying. Even if they succeeded, who's to say they wont just make thrones and crowns of their own? Ideology is cheap. What's the difference, realistically speaking?" Alan had asked this question before.

Those who knew him knew Alan was liable to tear his own colors to shreds for the sake of testing others. It didn't hurt to do so either. Every way of life needed to be verbally assaulted as a test of it's legitimacy. A resistance movement that couldn't take criticism was no better than the tyrants is sought to murder. To Alan, life was an argument. Every breath he took was a case against Ragnarok, and every fight he got into was a formal debate on who had the greater will to live. He hadn't lost one yet.

But he wasn't speaking against his own cause for the hell of it. Helena's response would decide whether she could 'have a hand' in anything unless Sion overrode him. The bartender was higher up on the ladder. Alan glared up at him. Someone's desperate for a new face. Let's not get careless, alright?
